WHEREAS it is the intention of the Mayor and Council of Cherry Hill Township to focus attention on noteworthy occasions and individuals; and
WHEREAS today, the American Legion hosts its 80th annual Statewide Memorial Service at Locustwood Memorial Park in Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and
WHEREAS in 1932, the Locustwood Cemetery Association deeded 400 free grave sites to the Legion for use by Legionnaires and their spouses, and agreed to erect a monument memorializing their service; and
WHEREAS as part of the transfer of grave sites, the American Legion has committed to holding an annual memorial on the first Sunday after Memorial Day, a tradition that has continued since 1935; and
WHEREAS each year, the Township of Cherry Hill is honored to join with the American Legion, S.A.L. Officers, Auxiliary Officers, Gold Star families and others to pay tribute to all those interred here who have served our nation; and
WHEREAS this year, in particular, we celebrate the revitalization of the monument and surrounding area, which have been repaired and beautified with the help of a local Eagle Scout candidate and his Scout Troop, restoring this hallowed ground to a condition befitting the final resting place of so many of our American heroes.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHUCK CAHN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the Township of Cherry Hill, County of Camden, State of New Jersey, do hereby join in commemorating the 80th annual
American Legion of New Jersey
Statewide Memorial Service
in the Township of Cherry Hill and do urge all citizens to join with me and Council in honoring and remembering the lives of all those interred in this special plots at Locustwood Memorial Park.
