WHEREAS it is the intention of the Mayor and Council of Cherry Hill Township to focus attention on noteworthy occasions and individuals; and
WHEREAS today, Cherry Hill Township wishes to honor Joyce Alexander Walker, a longtime friend and public servant whose passion for life and community has been an inspiration to all who know her; and
WHEREAS Joyce was the first African-American woman elected to Cherry Hill Township Council, a post she held from 1998 to 2005, and currently serves as a member of the Township’s Board of Fire Commissioners; and
WHEREAS Joyce was a founding member of the Cherry Hill Economic Development Council, served on the Township’s Planning Board, and has been an active member of the Kingston Estates Civic Association, St. Bartholomew’s Church, and the Cherry Hill African-American Civic Association; and
WHEREAS Joyce is a proud member of the Democratic Party, serving as a delegate to the 2012 Presidential Convention, and as one of the first organizers of Obama for America in Cherry Hill in 2008; and
WHEREAS a local business owner herself, Joyce has been a champion for women in government and in business, and was among the first women to graduate from Princeton University; and
WHEREAS in her private life, Joyce has been a beloved friend to many, and a loving wife and grandmother who helped to raise her grandchildren while their parents served in the armed forces overseas; and
WHEREAS in every aspect of her life, Joyce has lived a mission of unity, purpose and service, and Cherry Hill Township and our world are a better place because of her contributions.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHUCK CAHN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the Township of Cherry Hill, County of Camden, State of New Jersey, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, November 5, 2013, to be
Joyce Alexander Walker Day
in the Township of Cherry Hill, and do urge all citizens to join with me and Council in thanking Joyce Walker for her years of selfless and dedicated service to Cherry Hill and our region; for the immeasurable and lasting role she has played in making our world a better place to live; and for the countless lives she has touched along the way.
