WHEREAS It is the intention of the Mayor and Council of Cherry Hill Township to focus attention on noteworthy individuals and occasions; and

WHEREAS The Salt Shaker Foundation started a few years ago when Bart Saidel, a Cherry Hill resident with young children, was diagnosed with cancer; and

WHEREAS In response to his diagnosis, Bart’s friends rallied around him looking for ways to help; and

WHEREAS Because Bart’s cancer was similar to cyclist Lance Armstrong’s disease, this group of young professionals – many of them Cherry Hill natives – decided that the most effective use of their resources was to raise money for Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which raises money for cancer research and awareness; and

WHEREAS A bike-riding team was formed to participate in the annual Livestrong Challenge, with funding raised through Cherry Hill-based fundraisers at PJ Whelihan’s - all of which culminated in the formation of the Salt Shaker Foundation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity dedicated to the Livestrong ideals that in the battle for cancer, “unity is strength, knowledge is power, and attitude is everything”; and

WHEREAS Headed by Bart, who has since beat his cancer, this dedicated group of individuals has raised more than $130,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation with the support of many Cherry Hill businesses, and this year has donated an additional $2,500 to the Cancer Institute at Cooper University Hospital.

Now, Therefore, I, Bernard A. Platt, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the Township of Cherry Hill, County of Camden, State of New Jersey, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, July 29, 2008 as

Salt Shaker Foundation Day

in the Township of Cherry Hill and do urge all citizens to join with me and Council in honoring Bart Saidel for his courage and his commitment to helping others survive cancer, and the Salt Shaker Foundation for its successful ongoing effort to raise money in support of cancer research and awareness.
