If you have any questions regarding these guidelines, please call the Department of Public Works at 856 424-4422 between the hours of 7:00am and 6:00pm Monday – Friday.
General Rules:
In Cherry Hill Township trash, recyclables and yard waste are collected one day per week, Monday through Friday.
Place trash, recyclables and yard waste out for collection after 5:30pm the day before and prior to 7:00am the day of your scheduled collection day. All emptied containers must be removed from curbside within twelve (12) hours after the end of the collection day.
Trash, recyclables and yard waste must be placed within four (4) feet of the improved roadway and not placed in such a way that impedes a person’s access or progress on a sidewalk.
Preparation of Residential Solid Waste (Trash):
Trash shall be placed in standard metal or plastic solid waste containers with handles having a capacity of not more than fifty (50) gallons and not less than fifteen (15) gallons. Commercially produced trash bags designed for this purpose are also permitted for trash only. Prior to placing containers at the collection point, they should be drained of all accumulated water, and the resident should take all possible precautions to protect their trash from insects or other animal intrusions.
Latex paint can be disposed of in the regular trash, provided it is first dried out by mixing with sand or kitty litter. (See insert at end of guidelines)
Carpet must be cut into four (4) foot widths, securely tied into bundles weighing less than fifty (50) pounds.
Wood must be cut into four (4) foot lengths, securely tied into bundles weighing less than fifty (50) pounds. Nails must be removed or bent over to prevent injury to collection personnel.
Construction, remodeling and building materials generated by a private contractor must be removed by the contractor and disposed of properly at an approved disposal site at their cost. This debris is not to be placed curbside for normal residential collection by the Township’s waste hauler.
House cleanouts, furniture, carpets, bedding and similar household items resulting from the sale of a house will not be collected by the Township. Disposal of such items is the responsibility of the owners of the property or real estate agent.
No collection of trash or recyclables will be provided to dwellings under construction, dwellings being remodeled, vacant lots or vacant lands or those properties without a valid certificate of occupancy.
RecycleBank and Single-Stream Recycling
- All recyclables should be placed in the blue RecycleBank containers
- Acceptable materials include: glass jars and bottles, aluminum cans, tin cans, plastics #1, #2, #4, #5 and #7, newspaper, white paper, magazines, paperback books, cardboard
- Unacceptable materials include: coat hangers, pots, pans, plastics #3 and #6, ceramics, light bulbs, dishes, mirrors, drinking glasses, antifreeze containers, used oil containers, syringes
- To participate in the RecycleBank point program to receive coupons, you must register your address by calling 1-888-RBPaysU
- Points are based on the average recycling tonnage for each route/neighborhood, and are only credited the weeks in which a bin is deposited curbside.
- Remember plastic bags should not be placed in your recycle cart. They can be returned to your local grocery store, or brought to Public Works.
Preparation of Recyclable Materials:
The Township has adopted Single-Stream recycling where mixed paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and plastics are placed together in the Township supplied blue 96-gallon, 64-gallon, or 25-gallon recyclable containers. Loose recyclables placed on the ground alongside of the cart will not be collected by the automated truck, nor will overloaded carts, where the recyclables may fall on the ground during the automated arm operation.
Large pieces of cardboard must be cut up so they fit inside the container. Cardboard jammed into the container could stop the cart from emptying.
Before moving the 96-gallon or 64-gallon cart, grasp the handle and tilt the cart back slightly towards you. Push or pull the cart to the edge of the street. These carts are easy to move, but use care when rolling the cart on slopes, inclines, or steps. Place cart so that the handle and wheels face your home. The container must have a 4-foot clearance around it to be picked up in a safe and proper manner. Do not place the cart near trash containers, mailboxes, parked cars, utility poles, trees or other items that prevent clear access to the cart.
Please click here to see the Residential Guide to Zero-Sort Recycling for a complete listing of recyclable items you may place in your bin.
Preparation of Yard Waste:
Grass clippings, leaves, vegetative waste from lawns/flower beds and tree brush must be placed in biodegradable paper bags, open containers, or tied and bundled as applicable. Branches and limbs must be cut into four (4) foot lengths and securely tied in bundles with total weight not in excess of 50 (fifty) pounds. Yard waste labels are available at Public Works for you to place on your open yard waste containers to help identify them to collection personnel.
Placement of yard waste in plastic bags for collection is prohibited and will not be collected by the Township.
Yard waste generated by a commercial landscaper will not be collected by the Township.
It is recommended that residents consider a “cut it and leave it” program where grass clippings are left on the lawn.
Appliances, Metal Items:
Refrigerators, freezers, grills, stoves, washers, dryers, and other metal items are collected one day per week on a Wednesday. Please call the Department of Public Works at 856 424-4422 to schedule a pickup.
