Cherry Hills Engineering Department is responsible for implementing the Township's Capital Improvement Program, based on requests from residents and the Townships' long-term strategic plan. We have reinvested an average of $8 million each year for the last 10 years to insure a sound infrastructure.
Local government must pay attention to the systems that make our town a great place to live -- parks, roads, sidewalks, traffic lights, open space and trees. We have developed a long-term Capital Improvement Plan by analyzing the community's needs and stretching our tax dollars. These projects include traffic improvements, road management and reconstruction and the assessment and upgrading of sewer and stormwater management systems. Because these improvements last for many years, we have a capital program that funds these projects over time.
Road Repair
Now in its second generation, the Township Road Maintenance Program
will resurface all of the Townships 226 miles of roadway every
15 years, in addition to the routine maintenance work performed
on all roads. The Road Maintenance Program includes replacement
of deteriorated curbing and sidewalks and installation of handicapped-accessible
ramps. Storm drainage problems are identified and corrected and
sanitary sewer mains are inspected and repaired as necessary. In
2003, more than 45 Township roads will be resurfaced or reconstructed.
Township officials were instrumental in lobbying the State to improve state roads within the Township. Major improvements to Route 70 were completed in 1992, including the conversion of two major circles to fully signaled intersections. These changes alleviated traffic congestion and encouraged business development along the highway.
Storm Water Management
The Townships Storm Water Management Program, developed in
1992, addresses long-standing drainage and flooding problems in
key drainage areas, or sheds, throughout the community. Solutions
require large-scale construction improvements. The Storm Water Management
Program focused on six drainage shed areas: Ivy Lane, Park Drive,
Erlton South, Kingston, Three Oaks and Barclay. The Ashland Village
project is underway and Woodland/Kenilworth project is in the design
stage. The first four projects are complete, and Kingston is currently
underway. Projects in Barclay, Fox Hollow, Ashland Village and Woodland/Kenilworth
are in the design or construction stages.
Traffic Intersections
After a comprehensive review of traffic intersections, monitoring turning movements and vehicle flows, the Township began to upgrade many traffic signals to eliminate traffic backups. These improvements provide for efficiency and safety of motorists and pedestrians alike.
