The fall season is nearing an
end, and so is the Township’s annual neighborhood leaf-collection initiative,
which should be complete (following the current second-round pickups) by the end
of the week (Dec. 18).
Once again, the Township is
offering free bio-degradable, environmentally friendly leaf bags to reduce our
pickup of the nearly 80,000 metric yards of fallen foliage we expect to collect
curb-side in 2009. There are bundles of these bags still available, and they
can be picked up with your regular weekly yard waste even after the large-scale
pickups are over.
Stop by the Mayor’s Office in
Town Hall or at the Department of Public Works, 1 Perina Blvd., to get a pack
of these 30-gallon bags today – bagging leaves and putting them out on your
regularly scheduled trash day for our contracted weekly yard-waste pickup saves
time and money.
When you see signs posted in
your neighborhood regarding your leaf-collection start date, you may
rake leaves to the curb, at least 10 feet away from storm drains. In
addition, branches must be removed from leaf piles before they
can be picked up, and cars should not be parked on streets scheduled for leaf collection
from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Be advised: Landscaping
and lawn services cannot place leaves at the curb – they must bag the leaves
for curbside pickup or take care of their own hauling. Residents and lawn
service companies can take leaves to the Kresson Road ecology site for free by
calling the Dept. of Public Works and scheduling a drop-off time.
2009 Leaf Collection Schedule*
The second round of
collections began the week of Nov. 30 and continue through the week of
Dec. 14. This will provide DPW with three full weeks to accomplish a
second pickup prior to the holiday season.
*Please check the entrances to
your neighborhood for signs announcing collection dates, which will be
posted approximately two weeks prior to the start of your area’s
collection. Postings are also made on utility poles.
The following final areas are
scheduled for a 2nd leaf pick up the week of Dec. 14:
Kingston
Northwoods
Cherry Downs
Surrey Place East
Short Hills
Springbrook
Once these areas are complete,
Township leaf trucks will be converted into snow plows for the next season.
Our DPW will be posting weekly
updates of the leaf-collection schedule under “News” on the home page of the
Township Web site. Keep in mind the pickup schedule
is subject to delays during periods of inclement weather.
If you have any additional
