Virtual Tour of Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Once a sprawling agrarian community called Delaware Township, the town came to be known as Cherry Hill after a farm where cherry trees grew. In the 1950s, an elegant 100-room hotel called the Cherry Hill Inn thrived on that site. By 1961, when Cherry Hill Mall opened across the street, the citizens of Delaware Township voted to change its name to Cherry Hill. Today, beautiful cherry trees line Chapel Avenue, providing a marvelous spring atmosphere of beautiful pink cherry blossoms.
Nestled behind the busy main streets of Cherry Hill sits Barclay Farmstead, a carefully preserved window into the town's past. First settled in 1684 by John Kay, Barclay Farmstead is listed on the National and New Jersey Registers of Historic Houses. It is owned and operated by the Township and is open to visitors throughout the year. Visit the Farmstead's website to learn about membership in the "Friends of Barclay Farmstead," the private organization that supports ongoing preservation of this community treasure.
What was once a working mill and farm and a stop on the Underground Railroad, today is a vibrant Arts Center. Croft Farm has played an important role in Southern New Jersey for more than 300 years. See what programs you can get involved in at Croft this season, and don't miss your opportunity to tour the historic Kay-Evans farmhouse during one of our Township festivals.
More than 4,000 businesses call Cherry Hill home. Companies like Subaru (pictured), Vlasic Foods and Commerce Bancorp set up their American headquarters here, as have many other businesses and institutions- from high technology and health care centers to college campuses. Cherry Hill is at the center of it all! To find out more on Cherry Hill's bustling economy, contact the Cherry Hill Business Partnership.
Entertainment abounds in Cherry Hill! Catch a movie at the 24-screen AMC-Loews Theatres, the largest theatre in the cinema empire.
Scarborough Covered Bridge, on the aptly-named Covered Bridge Road, is the centerpiece of Cherry Hill's Barclay Farm neighborhood. The covered bridge, one of two still standing in New Jersey, was designed by famed architect Malcolm Wells and built across the Cooper River's north branch by homebuilder Bob Scarborough. It was dedicated on Valentine's Day in 1959 as 101 couples kissed to mark the tradition of the Kissing or Friendship Bridge.
Cherry Hill has loads of activities for our young ones. Spend the day at one of Cherry Hill's 49 parks and playgrounds or take the family to the Garden State Discovery Museum, an interactive children's museum. Kids can also get involved through the Cherry Hill Public Schools, rated as one of the best in the state by New Jersey Monthly Magazine, and the brand-new, state-of-the-art Cherry Hill Library.
Comprised of more than 30 members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cherry Hill Ensemble musical company has performed to much acclaim, attracting world-renown guest performers as Leonard Slatkin, Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra, and Grammy Award winning conductor Julius Rudel.
In close proximity to Philadelphia, Atlantic City and all that South Jersey has to offer, Cherry Hill has become a hub for the hotel and hospitality industry. Stay at any one of the many hotels in Cherry Hill or grab a bite at a local eatery. Cherry Hill boasts some of the region's best dining options from fine dining to family diners. For the Yahoo!
