WHEREAS it is the intention of the Mayor and Council of Cherry Hill Township to focus attention on noteworthy occasions and individuals; and
WHEREAS today, the Cherry Hill community wishes to celebrate and commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joseph D. Sharp Elementary School; and
WHEREAS Sharp was originally built on Marlkress Road in 1928, on 4 acres of farmland that belonged to farmer Joseph D. Sharp, an active community member who served on the then-Delaware Township Board of Education from 1889 until 1923; and
WHEREAS the current school, on Old Orchard Road, opened its doors to students in September 1964, although administrators weren’t officially presented with its keys until January 1965; and
WHEREAS in the five decades since, Sharp has continued to grow, evolve and thrive as a high-achieving school with a talented, dedicated and energetic administration and staff, bright young students, and devoted families – including many parents who themselves attended Sharp; and
WHEREAS we, as Mayor and Council of Cherry Hill, are proud to celebrate 50 years of Joseph D. Sharp Elementary School, and to commend the climate of collaboration, creativity and education that has allowed generations of Cherry Hill Elementary School students to learn, grow and succeed.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHUCK CAHN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the Township of Cherry Hill, County of Camden, State of New Jersey, do hereby proclaim January 23, 2015, to be
Joseph D. Sharp Elementary School Day
in the Township of Cherry Hill and do urge all citizens to join with me and Council in congratulating the entire Joseph D. Sharp Elementary School community on reaching this milestone, and in thanking the administration and staff for making Sharp a shining example of excellence in Cherry Hill’s public schools.
