WHEREAS it is the intention of the Mayor and Council of Cherry Hill Township to focus attention on noteworthy occasions and individuals; and
WHEREAS Sigma Alpha Rho Fraternity is celebrating its 100th anniversary on November 18, 2017; and
WHEREAS Founded in 1917 by eleven Jewish young men at West Philadelphia High School, Sigma Alpha Rho continued to grow through the 1920’s with new chapters being added in and around Philadelphia as well as in Reading, Harrisburg, Wilkes-Barre, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York. Still others were organized in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Allentown, New Orleans, Houston, Atlantic City, Los Angeles, Richmond, Mobile, Chattanooga, and Boston. In the early 1960’s , the fraternity became an International Organization inducting chapters north of the border in Montreal, Toronto, and other cities in Canada; and
WHEREAS Sigma Alpha Rho has its own scholarship fund including the Irving Rathblott Scholarship Fund established in 1946. Over the years, hundreds of members of the fraternity have been awarded scholarships; and
WHEREAS In the 100 years since its founding, well over sixty thousand men have gone through the ranks of Sigma Alpha Rho, making it perhaps the largest independent high school fraternity in the nation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHUCK CAHN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the Township of Cherry Hill, County of Camden, State of New Jersey, do hereby proclaim Saturday, November 18 , 2017, to be
Sigma Alpha Rho Fraternity Day
in the Township of Cherry Hill, and do urge all citizens to join with me and the members of Township Council in congratulating Sigma Alpha Rho on this special occasion, commend all its members who have carried it to its present heights and offer best wishes for its continued success as it moves toward further thresholds of greatness well into the next millennium.
